Echinacea is one of the oldest and popular herbal supplements in the world. Echinacea is a Native American plant that is a natural fighter. It is categorized as an immunostimulant, which is a substance that is known to boost a bodys immune system. How does your immune system work? White blood cells are part of the bodys cells that make up the immune system. These are the bodys first line of defense. If a flu virus enters an individuals body and begins to multiple, the white blood cells calls in for help from the T-lymphocytes, and also they can get help from lymphocytes. All these working together allow the body to destroy the viruses that have invaded it. How does it work? Echinacea works differently from other treatments. It works directly, killing the germ by strengthening an individuals immune system. There is evidence that Echinacea stimulates the body into producing more white blood cells. It also stimulates the release of interferons. These are what the body uses as a fighting weapon. Echinacea also helps to prevent bacteria from producing an enzyme called hyaluronidase, which works through the membrane, and invades the tissue. Echinacea also has been known to destroy viruses, such as the common cold and flu. How to take it This depends on an individuals immune system. You may want to check with your doctor before. They are some illnesses that you should not take Echinacea if you have. In most cases, it is safe for an individual to take three hundred milligrams three times a day. Others people will begin to take it once they feel a cold coming on, and to greet it with a line of defense. If you have a child, the studies on how Echinacea can help them has been up in the air. It is recommended that you for children ages six to thirteen you give them half the dosage recommended for adults. Under the age of six, you should consult your doctor. Childrens immune systems work differently than adults, many times they have not built up all of their resistance and need to do that before bolstering it with herbal supplements. Does it work? While Echinacea is just gaining ground in the United States, it has been research in Europe. Echinacea has been studied in Germany in a controlled study. No one knew which they were getting. The individuals who took the Echinacea experienced less frequent and severe virus infections. Studies continue to show that there are no toxic effects to taking this herbal supplement. As with any medication or supplement they are some side effects, some side effects with Echinacea are diarrhea. This has been the most frequent side effect anyone has noted. They are many things that an individual can do to help to boost your immune system. Taking Echinacea is just one of the natural herbal supplements that we can take. Studies continue to show the effectiveness of this supplement, and as more and more people continue to look to other alternatives, Echinacea will continue to gain in popularity. What is SAMe? SAMe (S-adenosylmethionine) is a naturally occurring compound found in all human tissue and organs. It is a “building block” necessary for the production of many compounds produced by your body, and is used in over 35 different biochemical reactions. SAMe actually donates a part of itself to form these new compounds through a process called methylation or transmethylation. SAME is one of the few dietary supplements on the market today that combines the benefits of several nutrients into one, because the body uses the substances produced from SAMe for numerous bodily reactions and processes. SAMe is a supplement formed in the body by an enzymatic reaction between adenosine-triphosphate (ATP) and methionine. It was discovered in 1952 in Italy and has been researched and manufactured there. SAMe works closely with folic acid and vitamin B-12 and functions as a methyl donor. This nutrient carries and donates methyl molecules necessary to facilitate the manufacture of DNA and brain neurotransmitters.* Tissue levels of SAMe are typically low in the elderly. How can SAMe help me? SAMe might be an effective treatment for depression, with fewer side effects than antidepressant drugs. But the real benefits and risks of SAMe are still unclear. In theory, it may increase the risk of heart disease. People with depression or joint pain should seek medical advice before trying SAMe. Supplementation with SAM-e increases levels of serotonin, dopamine and phosphatides, and improves serotonin and dopamine receptor site binding. Some research has shown that SAM-e provides relief from arthritis pain, without the stomach irritation caused by aspirin and similar drugs. Are there any side effects associated with SAMe supplementation? SAMe is a very safe dietary supplement. Minor side effects include nausea and gastrointestinal irritation, due to its sulfur content. These were only noted at very high doses (1200-1600mg) and symptoms diminished with continued use. Persons suffering from manic depression (bipolar disorder) should not take SAMe without prior consultation with their physician. If you experience any of the symptoms above for an extended period of time, you may be allergic to SAMe, or it may not be the right supplement for you. Benefits treatment for depression improves serotonin and dopamine levels relief from arthritis pain How Can SAMe Supplements Help Me? is a post from: Men's Health – Men's Guide to Fitness, Health, Weight Loss, Nutrition

Although vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is the most popular vitamin supplement in the United States, in many ways the most controversial. Over the years, many scientists have observed an exchange of views on the importance of polarized vitamin C supplementation on human health. Although researchers and experts may argue how much vitamin C we need to eat, one thing about vitamin C is not controversial, role in human source nutrition.Food when most people think of citrus as the best source of vitamin C, vegetables also contain high levels, especially broccoli, peppers, potatoes and Brussels sprouts. The exposure to air destroys vitamin C, so it's important to eat fresh food as fast as possible. Even if a salad for lunch salad bar is a healthier choice of a hamburger, the vitamin C content of fruit and vegetables from a salad bar is only a fraction of what would be a fresh salad. For example, fresh cucumber slices, if left standing, 41 percent and 49 percent of their vitamin C content to lose in the first 3 hours. A melon cut short in the refrigerator loses 35 percent of its vitamin C in less than 24 signs hours. Deficiency SymptomsWhile and most other animals can produce their own vitamin C, the body does not have that luxury. Throughout history, people have suffered from vitamin C deficiency disease known as scurvy. The classic symptoms of scurvy are bleeding gums, poor healing, and extensive bruising. In addition to these symptoms, susceptibility to infections, hysteria and depression are also affected features.Scurvy characteristic of many people in Egypt, Greece and Rome. Scurvy in the world doubt the story because the rations during military campaigns and long ocean voyages rarely contain adequate amounts of vitamin C. In some parts of the story, scurvy became a people like the plague. Between 1556 and 1857, for example, had 114 outbreaks of scurvy during the winter months when fresh produce is not available. Worse still was scurvy associated with exploration of the devastating voyages. Some sea along, like Jacques Cartier in 1856, learned that some foods help cure scurvy. Cartier's crew ate pine needles, the other teams ate oranges, lemons, limes, and berries. In 1742 the British physician James Lind wrote the first real scientific debate on the possibility that scurvy was a dietary deficiency. In his classic experiment, Lind has shown that patients who received the juice recovered from scurvy. Although some researchers have taken on the adoption by the rationing of citrus Lind long trips Crew Captain James Cook was completely prevented scurvy in his three long voyages between 1768 and 1779 the British navy did not use lime juice rations for 'crew in 1804 that put 62 years after the discovery of Lind. The current mainstream medical community seems to have taken the time to integrate scientific information on the importance of nutrition. Vitamin C was identified as the “antiscorbutic principle” and was isolated by Albert Sent-Gyorgyi in 1928. Almost 70 years later, researchers are still discovering the health benefits of ascorbic acid on the rise. Although scurvy is rare in our society, subclinical or marginal vitamin C deficiency is common, especially in elderly persons. The following table shows the percentage of population with a level clearly lower than vitamin C, as determined by measuring the vitamin C content of the buffy coat of blood. buffy coat is composed of all the cellular components of blood, but white blood cells, in particular.

Glycosylation InhibitionThe glucose binding proteins, a process called glycosylation, led to changes in the structure and function of many proteins in the body. In diabetes, the excessive glycosylation also comes with albumin (a blood protein) and protein in red blood cells, lenses, and the myelin sheath. This causes abnormal glycosylation structures and functions of cells and tissues, and contributes significantly to the complications of diabetes. For example, glycated LDL molecules (found in high concentrations in diabetic patients) does not bind to LDL receptors on or off the synthesis of cholesterol in the liver. As a result, diabetics usually have high cholesterol and a significantly increased risk for atherosclerosis.Fortunately, high doses of vitamin C (1000-3000 mg daily) significantly reduced glycosylated proteins, for example, a reduction of 33 percent for the glycosylated albumin.Low sperm vitamin C (ascorbic acid) plays a particularly important role in protecting the sperm from the genetic material (DNA) damage. The ascorbic acid levels are much higher in seminal fluid from body fluids, including blood. When dietary vitamin C was reduced from 250 milligrams to 5 milligrams per day in healthy subjects, the seminal fluid ascorbic acid decreased by 50 percent, and sperm count the damage to their DNA was increased by 91 percent.55 These Results indicated that vitamin C in the diet plays a crucial role in protection against damage of sperm and low levels of vitamin C in the diet can lead to infertility. We smoking reduces levels of vitamin C in the body of knowledge. Even the Food and Nutrition Board, the agency expects the RDAs, acknowledges that smokers must be at least two times more vitamin C than nonsmokers. 56 One of the reasons for a smoker can reduce sperm vitamin C depletion. In one study, men who smoked a pack of cigarettes a day were treated with 0 mg, 200 or 1000 of vitamin C. After one month, improves sperm quality in relation to the level of vitamin C, that is, when the level of vitamin C increased sperm quality.Nonsmokers not seem to get more vitamin C that smokers receive. In one study, 30 infertile men, but otherwise healthy were given 200 milligrams or 1000 milligrams of vitamin C or placebo were measured weekly daily. 58 sperm count, viability, motility, agglutination, anomalies and immaturity. After a week of 1000 mg group, with an increase of 140 percent of the number of sperm did not show less than 60 percent of these patients develop ulcers, many of which occur within the first 5 days of hospitalization.Analysis levels Vitamin C in 21 patients hospitalized for hip fracture showed that patients who are vitamin C levels were 50 percent lower than that of patients who did not develop pressure sores. It is interesting to note that the levels were low / inc, vitamin A and vitamin E was not associated with an increased risk of developing a sense of pressure sores. The of this study is enormous. Pressure ulcers are extremely painful and are often difficult to heal. If pressure ulcers can be prevented by maintaining optimal levels of vitamin C, would be a very successful medical. Of course, more than 20 years, studies have shown vitamin C is very effective in healing of pressure ulcers in a double-blind study.61 How easy would it cost extra vitamin C added to IV bags than attempt to deal with a bed wound together?
